Chapter Sixteen

//Scene 1: In the aftermath of the Tournaments, students slowly trickle back into the academy, satisfied with how things went down, at least generally speaking. Not wanting to stress everyone, given the dragon attack, the professors have granted a few days off school, allowing for them to take a couple days to recover… And, of course, to ask questions.\

Sampson sat at his writing desk, looking down at a blank piece of paper. The dragon attack had been unforeseen, and made him exceptionally worried. In the first half of the story, the author had been inventing evidence implicating Hero as the infiltrator. Now, though, they had turned a corner. As often happened with stories, things had taken off, leaving the author simply copying down the sequence of events as they happened. Now, Narathara was dead set on implicating Hero. In some ways, it made things easier. In other ways, it made things far more difficult. Narathara was at the school, which meant that she could be tracked easier than the author, who was a bit more incorporeal. That said, she had a tendency to actually try and kill people, whereas the author had actually proven himself to be a bit of a pacifist in that regard.

“Hey.” Victoria poked her head through the door of his room. “You busy?”

“Depends on your definition of the word.” He turned around and frowned. “I’m just trying to figure out exactly how Narathara did what she did. Creating thermite bombs to announce your presence is one thing. Spawning in a dragon is something entirely different.”

“I can actually answer both of those questions.” Victoria grinned as she dropped onto the bed. “I mean, how she did both things. The bomb in the Arcadiamere booth was a weapon she used ages ago, Professor Fangtooth was able to identify it. She’d use it for blowing up ships, bridges, castle walls, and more. It’s quite effective, and apparently pretty easy to make, if you know what to do.”

“Hmm. I don’t like weapons of mass destruction that are easy for my enemies to get their hands on.” Sampson sighed, then drummed his fingers against the desk. “Alright, then. What about the dragon?”

“Monster spawning is part of the School of Science. Remember the chariot races last semester?”

“Oh yeah! On the bright side, it wasn’t a cat dragon.” Sampson snickered in remembrance. “Can you imagine trying to kill it nine times.”

“Don’t say things like that.” Victoria muttered. “Someone might be listening.” She paused, then shrugged. “Anyway, monster spawning is something they do all the time. You have to have something from the monster, a scale or a toenail or something, and then some other odds and ends. Growth formula, often made from manure, and some seeds, and then some sort of binding agent, and—”

“Did you say manure?” Sampson crossed his arms.

“Yeah! It’s used in agriculture to fertilize fields all the time.” Victoria shrugged. “Why?”

“That was one of the things Narathara was having students gather for her.” Sampson puffed out his cheeks, then shook his head.
